Lanzetti announces his arrival

Saturday August 31 is a day Sebastian Lanzetti will remember with fondness for a long time to come.

SEVENTEEN-year-old Glenvista High School learner, Sebastian Lanzetti delivered a superb performance in the Formula Volkswagen races at Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria and announced his arrival as a serious contender in no uncertain terms

Qualifying showed how close the completion is as the top six drivers were covered by less than a tenth of a second with Lanzetti sixth fastest with a time of 1 minute 00,906 seconds and only 45/1000ths slower than Mathew Merton who was fifth.

The first of the two races for the day proved eventful yet Lanzetti showed great maturity as he avoided carnage around him and a solid drive saw him bring the striking glossy black car home in third place, his best result to date. “First Nicholas van Weely and Werner Scholtz tangled in front of me but I hung back to keep out of their fight so made up a few places. Unfortunately by then there was no chance of catching the leaders so I settled for third,” explained a beaming Lanzetti who was only one and a half seconds behind when the chequered flag was waved.

Race two was held late in the afternoon and with Robert Wolk’s car losing oil the track quickly got slippery. It proved no problem for Lanzetti as he drove an inch perfect race to finish second, less than half a second behind race winner, Scholtz who is another former national champion. “There was oil all over the place and it was like driving in the wet. I tried having a go for the lead around the outside of turn five but Scholtz hit the oil patch and had massive under-steer almost making contact with me so I backed out of it.”

The second and third place finishes ensured that he was classified second in the overall results for the day. Not bad for someone who only entered the fray in May and this event was only his fourth in the series.

Sebastian Lanzetti is proud to be associated with HRS Insurance Services and IVMA Engineering and also enjoys valued support from DAW.
