Learner suspended after violent assault on teacher

VIDEO footage of a Grade 8 learner from Glenvista High School violently assaulting a teacher has gone viral, over 30 000 YouTube views later.

GLENVISTA: The 14-year-old, who has since been suspended following a disciplinary process by a team of senior officials dispatched by the Gauteng Department of Education to ensure that the learner be dealt with accordingly, and the educator were provided with counselling.

On Wednesday September 18, in full view of a class of learners, the scandalous incident occurred and in the background his classmates can be heard egging the learner on while he yanked, kicked, punched thereafter proceeding to hit and throw a broom at his victim. “F**k him up
bra”, “Go get him, go get him bra,” said the amused group of pupils as they picked up the weapon used to attack the educator.

The attack, which started inside the classroom after Mr Jacobs found the boy to have not done his homework, soon went outside as the teacher in the video, attempted to exit the classroom with the boy in hand.

A statement by the education department commended Mr Jacobs “for displaying his professionalism by remaining calm and not retaliating”. The prefect in charge of that particular class on September 18, reportedly made them walk in single file around the school with their
fingers on their lips as punishment for the racket made while the attack took place, the following day.

Some of the learners who urged the angry boy on were ordered to submit a four page essay on respect after the incident, and the others in the class had to hand in a two page essay on the same topic of respect. Although there were learners who complained and asked why they were also included in the punishment even though they did not participate, they were told that they were part of the same class where the assault took place.

More than 250 people disliked the video, with many taking to the comments section to express their outrage, some even calling for the return of corporal punishment in South African schools. Comments on YouTube read:
