Kriek family cleans outside area of Laerskool President Steyn

"If you are proud of your school or things in life, then find a way to help and to show that you are proud," are the words of Adele Kriek, mother of two.

The Kriek family recently cleaned up the outside area of Laerskool President Steyn.

When regulations eased up a bit during lockdown Level 4, they started going for walks and walked passed the school every morning. Each morning they saw new trash outside of the school and also noticed the danger of acorns lying around.

“We gathered tools and wheelie bins and we went back to school and started cleaning. Of course, we had to adhere to the lockdown rules and we only went out early in the morning and returned home at 9 am.”It took us three days and each day we received a lot of thank you’s from runners and cyclists passing by,” said Adele.

A resident who walked past the family one morning thanked them and mentioned to them that he almost fell the day before due to an acorn. After three wheelie bins and a couple of bags full of acorns and trash, the area was clean.

“My children are both Steyntjies, one in Grade One, and the other in Grade Seven, and they were so eager to help clean up their school.”

According to Adele, she is very proud of her children who were not once ashamed to sweep the streets and they did so without any complaints.

“This is not for fame or a reward, but it’s our way of giving back to the community and our school and to be honest it was hard work, but it felt so good at the end of each cleaning session,” Adele concluded.
