GALLERY: AACL JHb hold Blessing of the Animals ceremony

This year the Blessing of the Animal ceremony was a special event that not only celebrated and recognised the special role animals play in our lives, but acknowledged the relationship between families and their pets.

FOR many years it has been a custom at Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg (AACL JHB) that in remembrance of St Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, animals are welcomed to a special ceremony on the first Sunday of October annually.

AACL JHB marketing manager Carren Nickloes said: “This year our Blessing of the Animal ceremony was a special event that not only celebrated and recognised the special role animals play in our lives, but acknowledged the relationship between families and their pets.” Supporters of the AACL congregated at the beautiful picnic dam at Rietvlei Zoo Farm, where Rev Ina Guy from the Brackenhurst Methodist Church blessed a diverse group of animals.

“Meeting up with many of the pets that have been adopted from us over the years was a privilege, with the unusual pets being the highlight of the event, including horses, donkeys, a goat, chicken, ducks and a rabbit,” Carren said.

A huge thank you to Julie Bezuidenhout from The Dog Club for bringing along Adam from Frank & Fearless fame and Sue Green for bringing the Joy Dogs. A surprise visit from the JMPD Dog and Equine units completed the ceremony.
