STARTING School can be quite overwhelming.

Life today is so pressurised for parents who find themselves having to work long hours to make ends meet. But the pressure does not end there. When young children start school a whole Pandora’s Box of new pressures are released.

Homework needs to be checked daily, routines need to be set into place, bags packed, lunches packed, sporting activities need to be attended and projects need to be completed.

To address this, a number of parental workshops to help guide and support parents will be overseen and run by Karen van den Oever. Karen has spent 32 years in education, 19 of which have been as a principal of Highveld Primary. Her teaching degrees and her MBA stand her in good stead to structure these programmes to meet the needs of both parents and learners.

The first of these workshops will be run on January 23 and February 27, at Revival City Alberton, 120A McBride Street ,Brackenhurst from 08:30 to 12:00. These workshops will be aimed at parents of children aged four to seven years of age.

The first workshop will address the skills your child will need to cope with formal schooling. Parents will be made aware of the importance of certain skills which are necessary in order to be able to learn to read, write and learn certain mathematics concepts. A workbook giving parents ideas of games and activities they can use to make learning these skills fun will be provided.

The second workshop will address the new approaches used by teachers to teach maths. This workshop will give parents an understanding of how they can help their children to become maths literate at an earlier age laying a good foundation for their future. It will also make parents more aware of how maths is now being taught giving them the skills to guide their child should assistance be needed.

Each of these workshops will cost R100 to cover the costs of the workbooks which are provided for everyone attending. Contact Karen van den Oever on 082 492 2169 should you wish to book to attend these workshops.
