Volunteers cook 2000 meals

Meals on Wheels (MOW) and volunteers prepared 2000 meals for needy residents.

JOHANNESBURG – Meals on Wheels (Mow) hosted a friendly cook-a-thon competition for volunteers from their supporting companies on Friday, October 16.

Volunteers from participating companies including Premier Foods, City Lodge, Travel IT and Drum Tribe cooked 2000 meals and through the South Hills Feeding Scheme distributed 500 of these meals to children living in South Hills. The other cooked meals were served at old age homes in Coronationville and Newlands.

“We are all proud to be involved in such a great thing. How else can you serve so many meals to people. We are happy that many companies have the faith to put their time and money into Mow,” said Simeon Burts from Mow.

The cook-a-thon started at a very high tempo as the volunteers were given an energetic gumboots lesson, courtesy of Drum Tribe who also had everyone at the warehouse singing Shosholoza before hitting the pots.

The annual cook-a-thon where volunteers will attempt to break Mow’s record number of meals is scheduled for Friday, November 20. It is expected that over 10 000 meals could be cooked on the day.
