Illegal dumping must be tackled

Clr Radebe said if you go to the township you will hardly see this kind of illegal dumping in the streets where people live.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – ANC Ward 124 Clr Sidney Radebe invited the Southern COURIER for a stroll in the South, particularly Turffontein, where illegal dumping is becoming a norm for residents.

Clr Radebe wants to raise awareness about the negative impact this behaviour has on the South, especially since the City of Johannesburg has started revamping certain areas and has set out plans to improve the entire South through development programmes such as the Turffontein Corridors of Freedom.

Clr Radebe said he has been in communication with officials from the City of Johannesburg and agencies such as Pikitup and JRA, where the Jozi@work can be used to hire young unemployed people to clean up the streets and alleys in Turffontein and other deteriorating areas in the South. Jozi@work is a programme aimed at creating employment for young unemployed people.

“This kind of illegal dumping is very concerning. People dump waste anywhere, especially near other people’s properties so that they (the dumpers) do not have to deal with the smell. Other people will go out at night and dump their rubble in the alleys behind their neighbour’s houses.”

Clr Radebe said other residents have asked for the closure of the alleys, but this could be a tricky process because there are some residents who depend on the alleys to park their vehicles. The plan is to have a meeting where all residents can come together and speak about the idea.

Residents can report illegal dumping and express their opinions to the committee member dealing with JRA issues, Eric Khetho, on 082 550 5022, or the committee member dealing with Pikitup issues, Sipho Thwala, on 082 550 5263, or the committee member dealing with issues of development planning and bylaw compliance, Annie Magano, on 071 335 4320 or Clr Radebe on 082 773 8169.
