Winchester danger corner: JRA to implement all recommendations

The rumble strips and 45m of guard rails will be installed as a matter of urgency by the JRA.

ANOTHER motorist reportedly lost control of his vehicle at the infamous Xavier Street and Marula Crescent bend in Winchester Hills.

Security officers at a nearby townhouse complex said around three weeks ago at 21:00, they heard a loud crash and immediately knew that another motorist had crashed. The security claim they assisted the motorist who sustained no injuries although the vehicle was badly damaged.

Following the March 6 accident that almost claimed the life of Mthunzi Mtshali, motorists and concerned residents requested the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to take action and implement safety measures at the dangerous curve.

A security officer at a nearby complex, Jose Macaringue, disputes the JRA claims and says that he has not seen any government officials or new safety measures at the bend. “No one has come to do anything at the corner, it’s still the same.”

The COURIER informed the JRA of these allegations and the marketing and communications operations manager, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, responded: “The JRA regional team has confirmed the following interventions were implemented in April 2015: all road markings were re-painted white and road markings are up to standard, 40km/h speed limit signs and chevron warning signs are in place. The rumble strips and 45m of guard rails will be installed as a matter of urgency by the JRA regional depot to ensure the safety of the community”.

The COURIER can confirm that all the road markings have been repainted but no speed limit signs could be seen.
