JHB march against crime and drugs

Residents and organisations march against crime and drugs ruining lives in Johannesburg.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Residents from the South of Johannesburg came together on Friday, September 19, to march against crime and drugs in the area.

The 4.9 km anti-drug walk started in Rotunda Park, Turffontein, and progressed through the streets of Kenilworth and Rosettenville. All the participants took to the streets with enthusiasm and they were lead by a local marching band.

The march was supported by various government departments, including local fire stations, SAPS, EMS, JMPD and the Johannesburg Department of Environmental Health.

The goal of the anti-drug campaign was to educate the community on the dangers of illegal drugs and to encourage drug users to stop using.

Special guests for the day included Member of Parliamentary (MP) Manny de Freitas, Yusuf Abramjee from Lead SA, Crime Line (Prime Media).

Manny de Freitas asked the children who were present to say no to drugs. “You are not a cool kid if you take drugs, the cool kids do not do drugs,” said de Freitas.

“The campaign was initiated by members from Region F Environmental Health and SAPS Booysens. Many role players came on board to make this day a huge success. A special thanks goes out to Kenilworth Spar, Glenvista Five Residents Association and Zoom Juice,” said Shalin Bidassey-Manilal, an environmental health practitioner from Region F.
