Hit-and-run victim remembered

The mother of a victim of a hit and run urges motorists to have a heart and not abandon their victims at accident scenes

A HIT-AND-RUN incident which resulted in the tragic death of a teenager in Kibler Park, on Swartkoppies Road near Peggy Vera Road, on July 23, inspired the Road and Student Transport Safety Campaign.

The campaign was launched on September 2, on the corner of Main Service Road and Peggy Vera, where two Johannesburg Student Council Chairpersons, JMPD officers, Johannesburg Emergency Services and learners of Danie Theron Primary School and Kibler Park High School called for motorists to respect road laws.

Nonhlanhla Mokhema, the mother of the 14-year-old victim, attended the launch to show support for the campaign.

“It means a lot that the accident happened and people didn’t forgot about it, and that there are people who are doing something about it. Let this be the last incident. There shouldn’t be other children who die on this road,” said a teary Mokhema.

She urged motorists who have hit something on the road to stop and check what’s happening, because there could still be a chance that a life could be saved.

It’s alleged that the teenager was hit by a white Hyundai Veloster which fled the scene after the incident.

Johannesburg Student Council chairpersons, Jonty Ngwekazi and Mamakiri Letswalo, further emphasised the importance of motorists to display greater regard for roads laws. According to the representatives, many fatal accidents could be avoided if more people didn’t skip red lights and made an effort to stick to regulated speed limits.
