Clr speaks on ward achievements

ANC Clr Radebe sees growth in ward 124 nearing the end of term.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – With local government elections and the end of term nearing, ANC ward 124 Clr Sidney Radebe voiced his opinion on the ward’s achievements and challenges.

Clr Radebe’s term will end this year but he wanted to point out the development that has taken place in the ward since he took office in 2011.

Ward 124 includes areas such as Booysens, Turffontein, Forest Hill, Kenilworth, West Turffontein, Glensk, Orphaton and sections of the Johannesburg inner city.

“Before everything else I want to thank my functional ward committee members who have been providing reports on a monthly basis. Thus far we have convened more than 40 public meetings and invited the MMC of Housing, Daniel Bovu, and the MMC of Community Development, Chris Vondo, to discuss development issues in their respective departments.

“It is important to inform people of what the ANC led government has done in ward 124. Courtesy of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), we changed the Selby Village Hostels into family units and brought dignity to the men who now live with their families in these units. We were also able to pave some areas, plant trees, install concrete chairs, fix street lights and sidewalks in the Westgate Taxi Rank as part of the Westgate Upgrade Project,” said Clr Radebe. These development projects created 900 jobs for the local community.

The ward councillor also mentioned the re-launch of Rotunda Park, which hosted the Johannesburg Mayor, Parks Tau, and MMC Vondo. According to the councillor, there are other phases of development due in the park.

“Booysens Informal Settlements, Madondo Informal Settlements in Faraday, and Emaxhoseni Informal Settlement, received mobile toilets and running water taps,” he said.

Clr Radebe said despite these developments, there are still service delivery matters that need to be addressed. “Some streets lights are not working, the grass is not being cut in time and there are residents who are not complying with the bylaws concerning Spaza shops. Pickitup and the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) need to come to the party,” he added.
