IT’S great to win a race, but it’s even more satisfying to know that your efforts have helped make the world a better place.

That’s the message from The Salvation Army, which is looking for cyclists for November’s Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge to ride in support of its many outreach programmes.

Major Carin Holmes, PR secretary for The Salvation Army Southern Africa Territory, said: “Cycling is such a popular sport and we are so pleased that this race provides an opportunity to not only participate in the sport, but also do something for people in need.

“We are therefore asking cyclists to support us in three crucial areas of our work – care for children in need, efforts to prevent human trafficking, and rehabilitation centres for alcohol and drug addiction.

“The Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge provides an ideal opportunity for cyclists to participate in one of Joburg’s most exciting and well-supported events, as well as to show they care for the community,” she added.

She urged cyclists to be in contact with The Salvation Army as at least 20 are needed before the closing date at the end of August to make up a charity team for the race.

The Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge’s charity outreach is called ‘Ride for a Purpose’. Last year, cyclists raised more than R14 million for charities.
