DA councillor gives advice on dumping waste

Concerned citizens can assist the City keep our pavements clean in two ways.

IN response to the article that appeared in the previous issue of the Southern COURIER (Illegal dumping tackled, page seven), concerned citizens can assist in keeping our pavements clean. Here are two ways:

1. Bulky items, mattresses and bases, redundant furniture and appliances past their sell by date can be removed by arrangement with Pikitup. There are two requirements. Firstly phone and arrange for the collection. You will be advised of the collection date by Pikitup (usually collections are only done once a month). Secondly, on the date provided, the item or items need to be left on the pavement. Why you may ask, a special collection date? Pikitup’s normal work is to collect refuse and rubbish. This is delivered to the landfill site for processing. Items collected by arrangement are largely recyclable and to mix the two is impractical. To arrange collection contact Absolom Mkhumbeni on 082 855-9263 or Tony Tree on 083 572-5861.

2. Should residents wish to dispose of building rubble, it can be taken to the Robinson Landfill site, corner of Turffontein and Marlborough roads, Stafford, a suburb near the north west corner of the Turffontein Racecourse. There is no cost as long as the rubble is clean and has no wood, ceiling boards, cement packets and so forth. Any quantity can be delivered. No special arrangements need to be made other than arriving during normal business hours, 07h00 to 16h00.
