Residents angered by sex workers

Sex workers say they have no other means of income but for the residents who have to put up with them, it’s become a nightmare.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Fed-up with sex workers bringing the area down, residents from Kibler Park, Mayfield Park, Rispark and Patlyn, gathered on Saturday, May 30, to vent their anger.

The residents were joined by D&D Tactical Security and together they drove around the surrounding areas of Kibler Park, voicing their frustration and concerns against the sex workers.

“Residents in these areas have to put up with sex workers standing on street corners begging vehicles to stop so they can make some money. Corners of Summit Drive, Bambi and Gazelle roads are favourite spots for the sex workers to try and get business. It’s getting out of hand and if residents ask the sex workers to move away from in front of their homes, some of them become aggressive,” said Trevor Sturgess (Kibler Park and Walkerville Community Group), who initiated the march.

Another resident said: “When I arrived home from work one day, a sex worker was standing outside my gate trying to flag motorists down. When I told her to move, she threatened me with a rock. This has to stop.”

Members of Mondeor SAPS regularly visit the affected areas and remove the sex workers. They are taken to Mondeor Police Station and prosecuted. Unfortunately, days later, they are back on the street corners.

The sex workers say they have no other means of income but for the residents who have to put up with them, it’s become a nightmare.

“We are aware of the problem of prostitution in Kibler Park and surrounding areas. Operations are carried out on a regular basis in these areas whereby prostitutes are arrested. This office urges the communities not to approach these prostitutes as this may result in confrontation between them,” said Lt Col NM Mhlaba.
