Midas rugby and family day: The local derby between near neighbours proves to be a big success.

Alberton won the much coveted Kevin de Klerk trophy for the first time.

A-SQUARE-Forklift Alberton Rugby Club’s first side snatched up a vital nail biter against Union Bulldogs over the weekend.

The local derby was held on Saturday, May 23, at Pioneers Park when the two clubs met to determine where the Kevin de Klerk trophy will stand for 2015.

Alberton was victorious in their efforts where both clubs didn’t give an inch. The visitors won the match 14-8 with the half time score was 0-0.

Union Bulldogs was the holder of the trophy for three years and had to hand it to near neighbours in 2015.

The two sides were at logger heads going to the change rooms at half time. Union Bulldogs only opened the score some 20 minutes into play during the second half. Fly half Renier Wienener slotted over a penalty, to make it 3-0 in their favour.

Alberton responded with a well deserved corner try by Anthony Kapp which was converted by Reinand Swanepoel to place his team in front for the first time in the match, 7-3.

Union Bulldogs then made their presence felt with their own try in the corner by wing Shane Germishuys to take the lead by a single point, 8-7.

But the match was all but over as the visitors scored in the dying minutes, yet again in the corner, with 14-8, to snatch up the much coveted trophy.

Other results:
