Still alive and bowling at Turffontein club

Turffontein celebrating 100th years.

BEING one of the oldest clubs in Johannesburg, Turffontein Bowling Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

This truly is a milestone for a club with only one green and a small active membership. Most members play on weekends, mainly Sundays.

So far, it has been a busy couple of months for the members.

Dolores van der Linde was selected to play as second for the Johannesburg Bowling Association Inter District A team, in Pretoria last year. This year, she was selected as Skip for the B side.

The tournament was held in George and the bowlers won gold medals.

Dolores was runner up in the JBA Senior Singles Championship and she and Venetia Falconer reached the quarter finals in the Gauteng Open Pairs tournament. Dolores and Glynnis Seegers were runners-up in the JBA Senior Pairs.

Turffontein Women won the Second Division League and have been promoted to First Division next season.

The club takes pride in being one of the very few clubs which still sponsors their selected teams for the South African Nationals. This year there will be a men’s side participating on the East Rand and two women’s teams which will be playing in Port Elizabeth. The club normally only sponsors one side each, meaning the second women’s side will have to pay for themselves. However, during a fundraising event the club did so well that the funds raised, almost cover both sides, leaving a small shortfall for the club to contribute.

New bowls bags were donated to the teams by Alwyn van der Linde, their biggest supporter,

With more new challenges awaiting these teams in Port Elizabeth, all that’s left to say is, watch out, TBC is ready to take you on.
