Records tumble as the Naturena train surges on

Kaizer Chiefs continued to dominate the ABSA Premier League when they set the new record of most points achieved in a season.

Only a week after they secured their league victory, Kaizer Chiefs defeated Mamelodi Sundowns by a late goal from Bernard Parker.

The Chiefs striker described his goal as a ‘half a chance’. He was quoted by the club’s website as saying, “I had to dive to get to the ball earlier than the defender. I went in with full force and it paid off.”

The match, which lacked excitement in the first 45 minutes, came alive in the second half. The only excitement in the first half came in the 20th minute of the game when Sundowns’ Mzikayise Mashaba had the first chance of the match.

Coming from a stunning goal in the Nedbank Cup against Vasco da Gama, the fullback-come-midfielder surged into the area, but was unable to connect sufficiently with Teko Modise’s perfectly weighted pass.

Sundowns were unfortunate to lose a player in the 89th minute when Siyanda Zwane was sent for an early shower after picking up his second caution of the match.

Coach Stuart Baxter reflected with happiness on having achieved a record number of points.

He said, “We are glad to have broken the record already.”

By getting to 66 points, Chiefs surpass Mamelodi Sundowns’ 65 points mark set during the 2013/14 PSL season.

“More pleasing is that this record sets us on track for bigger records,” said Baxter to a possible 72 points if Amakhosi win their remaining two league matches against Bidvest Wits and Chippa United.
