Ormonde welcomes school rejected in Mondeor

Finally! A public primary school to be built for Ormonde and Evans Park

PREFABRICATED material buildings have been spotted by residents, and according to Ward 54 Cllr Sergio Dos Santos a primary school is being built on land belonging to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

Development is going full steam ahead in Ormonde on the corner of Verdant Road and Alwen Road. Although residents of Ormonde and Evans Park were not consulted, some residents welcomed the news of the new school.

“This piece of land has been so problematic for years. The owners did not maintain it and the grass was always overgrown. It also attracted hawkers who sold marijuana. So I’m happy that it’s now going to be put to good use,” said Evans Park resident Phindile Mtshali.

The primary school will be the first public primary school in the Ormonde area, which will also provide placement for children coming from Mondeor, Ridgeway, Naturena and Evans Park.

Initially the school was rejected by Mondeor residents, when the GDE made known its plans to have another primary school built in the area. The school was supposed to be a measure to address the increasing number of children seeking primary school placement.

Mondeor already has two schools, Dalmondeor Primary School and Mondeor Primary School. However, there have been issues experienced with some children not being able to get placement in these schools due to the schools being full.

Meanwhile, in Glenvista there have been no new developments communicated by the GDE about the prefab school on the corner of Laubscher and Stegman streets, Glenvista ext 4 that has residents up in arms.

Angry Glenvista residents said they didn’t want the school made of prefabricated material in their area as it would bring down the value of their properties; instead they wanted a brick school.
