Mounted Horse Games comes to the South
Clinics are held across the country and chose an invitational team to compete in the world team championships
MOUNTED Horse Games were introduced to South Africa in 2000 by the Canadian National Mounted Games team. Clinics are held across the country, and an invitational team was selected to compete in the world team championships.
A solid base was established in KZN where Ian Marr, the Chairperson of MGASA lives. After moving to Pretoria to study veterinary subjects in 2012, he has been developing the sport with the help of some key members such as Michelle Mackenzie and Felicia Rowan residing in the South.
Western Province will be hosting their first interprovincial in April, which two Gauteng teams and two KZN teams will attend and compete against three of their teams.
SA has sent invitation teams to the World Team Champs in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2014. SA pioneered and hosted an international in 2010, namely the Southern Hemisphere Championships. A team then travelled to New Zealand in 2011 and 2014 and to Australia in 2012 for the same competition. It was hosted by SA in 2013 and our team was victorious. The competition has grown and is known as the Five Nations, which includes Canada and USA.
2015 sees a team travelling to Kentucky for the World Team Champs and to Australia for the 5 Nations Champs. In 2016 the interprovincial competition will be hosted by Gauteng, and South Africa will host the 5 Nations Champs in 2017.
A one-day camp for interested riders and their ponies was held by Megan Marr at Penbritte in the South and a competition on Sunday March 15, which proved to be a success.
Two riders at this competition will travel to Kentucky: Daniel Ferreira and Megan Marr. Riders who have put their names forward for selection for the 5 Nations Championships are Donnelly Mackenzie, Courtney Mackenzie, Sam Kruger, Dawie le Roux and Grace Quelly.
