Prawn Festival: A great day of fun racing and entertainment

Piere Strydom from Alberton landed a double at the first leg of the SA Triple Crown.

IN a superlative way Piere Strydom recorded a double at the first leg of the South African Triple Crown and Wilgerbosdrfit Triple Tiara.

To add to the excitement of the fourth annual Prawn Festival over a ton of prawns were sold to a vibrant crowd. The festivities took place on Saturday February 28 at Turffontein Racecourse and amid the rain late in the afternoon the horseracing fraternity was treated to an abundance of activities along the trackside.

Strydom who resides in Alberton made heavy weather under stormy skies at Turffontein, landing a double when he won the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and Triple Crown.

On Siren’s Call, Strydom, showed his judgement in the final 50m when he flew past the finishing line in the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiarra. The filly is trained by Sean Tarry and delivered excellent pace.

Harry’s Son, the favourite for the day, stole the show when Strydom outraced the field in the Grade 2 R1-million Betting World Gauteng Guineas.

Lafferty said that he might bring Harry’s Son back to the Highveld for the SA Classic – the second leg of the Triple Crown next month. The 2 450m of the third leg, the SA Derby, three weeks after that, looks very unlikely.

Lafferty has already outlined plans to take Harry’s Son to Dubai for next year’s Carnival season.

Strydom said Harry’s Son had been “a lot more professional” than usual in this race – having previously shown an inclination to over-race.

The next two legs of the Triple Crown run at Turffontein on Saturday March 28, featuring the inaugural Country Garden, and Saturday April 25, which features the extremely popular Intercontinental Village.
