STI and Condom Day at South Rand Hospital

This awareness campaign was embraced by the attendance of the entire hospital community, which eventually recognised the importance of the information shared with them throughout the day.

THE HILL – South Rand Hospital commemorated its annual STI (sexually transmitted infection)/condom and Valentine’s Day on Friday February 13.

As part of commemoration, South Rand Hospital together with their external stakeholders embarked on a number of activities such as dissemination of educational materials in the form of pamphlets and other communication materials emphasising the importance of condom usage as the main intervention used in the fight against the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.

This awareness campaign was embraced by the attendance of the entire hospital community, which eventually recognised the importance of the information shared with them throughout the day.

“I realised that there is more that we don’t know about health issues, particularly the symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases. I’m going to share this information that I have here with my partner,” said the hospital staff member.

The celebrations of the day had a five-km walk and aerobics that comprised hospital staff members’ participation. The aerobics were led by Morongoe Mkansi (professional nurse) and Noluntu Bakana (clinical technologist), who form the hospital staff compliment, and this was part of the healthy lifestyle promotion.

“We congratulate all the winners and hope they will keep up the good work and the healthy lifestyle,” said hospital Employee Wellness Programme coordinator Christy Griffiths.

The annual awareness campaign’s main objective was to reach to as many people as possible nationwide and spread the positive message about protective sex, condom usage and early symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases, with the emphasis on visiting health facilities once the symptoms are detected.
