Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) and African Queen have partnered to launch the first African Queen Women’s Club Cricket League for the union.

Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) and African Queen have partnered to launch the first African Queen Women’s Club Cricket League for the union. The third round in this competition will commence this coming weekend.

The past few weeks has seen competitive cricket being played by eight clubs within the GCB, including Delfos, Dobsonville, Jeppe, Kagiso, Khosa, Randburg, Soweto and Vaal. These teams have been playing under the naming rights sponsorships of companies within the African Queen stable by names of McMurray Aldum, African Queen, Arganics, Micron, Universal Paints, Lumoss, Isoplus and Driconeq respectively.

Soweto is heading the log with nine points, while Randburg is second on six points in Pool A. In Pool B Jeppe leads with nine points and in second place is Vaal on six.

Heading into the third round, the log standings are as follows:

Players who have performed exceptionally in the completed three matches include an impressive batting performance from Vlooi Jansen van Vuuren from Driconeq Vaal with 160 runs from 84 balls and an average of 80, and Keneoue Makhekbe from Isoplus Soweto who took eight wickets in six overs for six runs.

The women now feel the energy, enthusiasm and passion to show their skills as they feel important and noticed with their varying coloured tops, club logo’s and sponsor logo’s in the T20 format of the game. Chief Executive Officer Greg Fredericks commended African Queen and the players for the manner in which they launched this year’s women’s club cricket league.

“Financial support for women’s cricket is crucial to build the sport and lift the profile of women’s cricket within the GCB. Womens and girls cricket is a key priority for the GCB, and I would like to thank the sponsor and the players for delivering on two great rounds already. I look forward to seeing what unfolds in the third and final rounds of the competition,” said Fredericks.

Fixtures for the semi -final (third) round of the African Queen Gauteng Cricket Women’s League are as follows: The teams will be in action on Saturday February 21 from 09:00.
