Social movement against crime

The campaign aims at building community cohesion, that will help promote a safe, healthy and sustainable neighborhood particularly for Wards 55, 56, 57 and 124.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Tornolux, a non-profit company (NPC), is launching its first campaign for a safe, healthy and sustainable neighborhood for Kenilworth and surrounding areas in Johannesburg South on October 29 at Rotunda Park, De Villers Street, Turffontein.

The campaign aims at building community cohesion, that will help promote a safe, healthy and sustainable neighborhood particularly for Wards 55, 56, 57 and 124.

Chairperson of Tornolux NPC, Neo Segapo, said the targeted areas have become notorious for being crime havens, with social decay, a lack of civic education; this situation impacts on the lives of those who reside and run businesses in the local community.

“These areas have become so crime ridden that it is impacting the way of living for local residents as well as businesses; as people live in constant fear,” explained Segapo.

Segapo said that businesses are leaving the area, while others are anticipating leaving because of the crime in these neighborhoods.

The launch is set to help initiate and encourage a greater Kenilworth Neighborhood Watch; the elimination of littering; zeroing in on general decay by- law compliance; business/skills development and training; a Know Your Neighbor Campaign/Street and Block committees and endorsing a Local Drug Action Committee.

The community at large, including people affected by criminal behaviour, people who want to help change and stop this scourge, are invited to come and join the kick-off of the community stakeholders meetings, which will commence at 18:00. Refreshments will be served.
