OPINION: You voted DA but what do they do for you as a voter

So you may have given the DA your vote, but do you know why or even remember? Do you remember their 2011 elections manifesto?

You may not remember that in 2011 you voted for the DA in the Local government elections, that in 2014 you may have voted twice in the Provincial and National government elections and maybe the by-elections too, the latest by-elections being August 13, 2014.

So you may have given the DA your vote, but do you know why or even remember? Do you remember their 2011 elections manifesto?

In their manifesto in 2011 they promised a lot of stuff, especially in the Joburg municipality, but three years down the line their current messaging and what they do has nothing to do with their manifesto.

They forgot all about what they promised you in their manifesto, all they seem to do is to respond or criticise what the ANC is doing or not doing.

Let’s take it further: what does the DA councillor really do for you in your ward? They serve in council portfolio committees, but do they ever tell you as a resident what those portfolios entail and how they influence the City’s policy or budgets?

Since 2011 the DA has opposed Council budgets and business plans, but ask any DA councillor about any of the department’s business plans or budgets and they don’t have a clue. The majority of them don’t know the City’s policies or even the DA’s counter policies.

In my mind, if you criticize, you must come up with an alternative or a solution to a problem. What solutions does the DA have to the majority of people who go to bed hungry, what is their solutions to food programmes? What do they say about child-headed households?

How do they propose to enlighten poor households about accessing rebates that the City offers? Does the DA even know how they are going to help businesses that are not creating jobs and are losing business? How will they deal with the growing influx of people migrating to Joburg for better opportunities?

I have never understood how the DA would deal with housing problems, how they would eradicate the 180 informal settlements in Joburg, they can’t deal with their very own informal settlements in Cape Town.

So why did you vote for the DA?
