Bad living conditions in building

Tenants are tired of the leaking toilets, showers, pipes and broken windows.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A Tupa Real Estate building at Generium Street, Rosettenville is a poorly maintained mess that looks beautiful on the outside but horrific on the inside.

The building opposite Video Town makes 27-year-old Casey Rekx, who lives there with her fiancé and their 5-year-old daughter feel betrayed, because the service is poor. She said she also gets overbilled.

Casey’s fiancé leased the flat in November 2012, and they cannot wait to move out of the flat, which Casey calls a hazard to children because there are exposed live wires.

“The block of flats has at least 40 tenants and a couple of shops that share 12 bins and a few kitchens. The windows are broken and rats have made this place a home.

“The people from Tupa increase our rent without giving us notice, and the way they do things is unlawful. They evicted a pregnant lady without following a lawful protocol, and tried doing that to me, but I told them I know they need a court order to do so and they must at least give more than a few months.

“Tupa does not take care of its tenants. All they want is for people to pay rent, which is much more than what people signed for when they signed their leases.

“I want people to see the condition Tupa makes its tenants live in. There are live wires exposed in the building, some within children’s reach.

“If I am not mistaken, this flat belongs to Mrs Dube, who is not aware that Tupa treats us like this. We have to squeeze ourselves into some of the showers, the toilets do not function properly, but charges keep increasing.

People from the Department of Health are due to come and inspect the building, which Casey believes is not adequate to be rented to people.

Casey’s statements showed bills fluctuating between R3 000 and R4 000, which she said is more than what her fiance signed to pay.

Estelle from Tupa Real Estate said: “The problem is that some of the tenants do not pay rent, and they do not come to the office to make arrangements.

“Things that are broken in the flats do not get reported to our maintenance. The tenants should report to their caretaker.
