Byron to compete in Speedway race

Walkerville Speedway racing this coming weekend.

Walkerville speedway track will host the Boet Strydom Golden Speedway Boot competition on Sunday June 29, starting at 13:00. Boet, who raced back in the 70’s, donated his very own speedway boot which he had bronzed as the trophy for the overall winner on the day.

Byron Bekker, South Africa’s most successful speedway rider on the International circuit and multiple winner of the Golden Speedway Boot, will be challenging the likes of The Devine Brothers, Neil Pettit, Lyle Kotze, Gio Nunes and Mac Magill to name a few. There may even be a hint of a return to speedway for another South African international, Deon Swart.

Bekker, who is desperate to ride in the meeting, had suffered a knee ligament injury he received during a match for his Premier League club Edinburgh Monarchs in the U.K. back in 2012, while enjoying his best season during his successful international career. He has not raced competitively since. This will be Byron’s first race meeting since the injury.

Byron says he feels okay with just a bit of pain now and then. His bike is ready to race, so now it’s down to practice ahead of the meeting to prepare him.

There will also be races for the Pw’s , quad bikes and sidecars.

Food and a licenced bar will be available at the Walkerville showgrounds.

Be sure not to miss the action on June 29.
