Rosettenville warehouse and store shut down

Expired products are being sold to people in Rosettenville.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – THE Gauteng Department of Health and the Metro Police shut down a warehouse and a store, which failed to comply with trade laws when they sold expired goods that nearly took a life.

The warehouse and store at the corner of Main and Daisy streets was closed on Tuesday June 10, but opened to trade again the following day.

However, the Gauteng Department of Health acted swiftly to ascertain that orders to stop trading were taken seriously and the owners complied with the trade laws.

The department found that the majority of the drinks at the warehouse had passed their expiration dates, but were still sold to customers who paid less attention to the expiration dates.

The metro police also found that some of employees were sleeping in the warehouse, covering see-through holes with curtains and blankets.

Both the store and the warehouse, Marverick’s Trading, belonged to Hashim Mohamed, who said he will close down the shops and follow the trade policies of the department.

Prior to the department’s involvement, Marcus Ross (49), bought a Stoney soft drink from the store and drank it at his La Rochelle home and suddenly got a headache, stomach ache and his face felt like he was burning.

He then rushed to the South Rand Hospital, where he was injected in his stomach, arm and back to prevent his condition from worsening.

“The department received complaints and went to the shop to find expired products being sold to customers. We have closed the store and instructed the owner to apply for certificates and comply with the trade laws, before he could start trading again,” said Andrew Kruger from the Gauteng Department of Health.
