ONE of the South’s most popular landmarks is Uniao Cultural Recreativa Desportiva Portuguesa, which has been in existence for 53 years.

The club is considered as one of the most important landmarks in the area and in the greater Johannesburg. Many sport and cultural events and festivities took place at the club over the years.

In the 53 years the club boasted events such as the South African Games and played host to many international gymnastic events as well as international mini trampoline, where South Africa took on the world’s best.

Currently it is an important facility for the National Basketball League, which takes place at the end of the year. The club has its own two basketball teams. “We are doing everything in our power to keep going and let the legacy of Uniao live on for generations as it did in the past,” said Michael Miranda.

“This is not only a Portuguese landmark, but also where many sporting and cultural events are hosted by the club. Uniao Desportiva is under a new committee, and they are trying their utmost to bring back the once beloved landmark to serve the South as in the past.”

The club also serves traditional Portuguese food at the respective restaurants. These restaurants are open seven days a week from 09:00. Contact Rodger on 011 434 4749 or the office at 011 434 1897, fax: 011 433 1898 or email uniaoportuesa@telkom.net
