Thousands walked the Gandhi Walk

On Sunday May 18 thousands of people walked in the 29th Gandhi Walk from Gandhi Hall, Lenasia.

LENASIA – This year’s Gandhi Walk was dedicated to the memory of Madiba, as a tribute to an icon who had sacrificed his life for our country and its people. Gandhi Walk follows his philosophy of living in peace and unity.

His granddaughters, Zoleka, Ndileka and Zinhle Mandela and his great grandson Thembele, attended andparticipated in the Gandhi Walk.

Amongst other dignitaries, Minister Derek Hanekom, Ahmed Kathrada, Indian High Commissioner Virendra Gupta, MEC Eric Xayiya, MEC Ismail Vadi, Indian Consulate General, Randhir Jaiswal, Kirti Menon great granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr EE Jassat, Yusuf Abramjee Prema Naidoo and Micky Padayachy participated in the Gandhi Walk.

The three ambassadors of South Africa, Miss SA Rolene Strauss, Miss India SA Gabriella Seekola and Miss Earth SA Ashanti Mbanga were driven in open cars alongside the walkers.

Free health checks for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol were administered, by staff of Lenmed Private Hospital. Free tests for HIV were offered by MAP (Muslim Aids Programme).

A Kids Zone was set up to keep young children entertained and occupied under supervision and tasty vegetarian food was enjoyed.

A free Mela Fusion show with dances by students from various dance schools and bollywood and modern songs rendered by talented singers and an artist/comedian from Cape Town, Waseef Piekaan, thrilled the audience with his stand-up comedy stint.

PRO, Mahendra Modi, says “Gandhi Walk always gives back to the community. This year donations were handed to TIBA Services for the Blind, Saaberie Chishty Ambulance Service, LICO (Lenasia Inter cultural Organisation) and Ikageng Home for the Aged.”

A raffle draw took place to end the day’s proceedings.
