Hospital launches ground-breaking AI technology for early breast cancer detection

Many different health professional practitioners gathered at MediMax at Newmarket for the official launch of Lunit AI, which helps detect breast cancer as early as possible.

In a significant advancement for women’s health, Diagnostic Radiological Services (DRS) unveiled Lunit AI, a cutting-edge machine designed to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages.

This innovative technology promises to enhance diagnostic accuracy and speed, outpacing traditional methods such as mammograms and X-rays.

The launch at MediMax in Newmarket was themed ‘Conquer Cancer through AI’.

Early detection and accuracy

Lunit AI demonstrated an impressive ability to identify 23% more breast cancer cases at earlier stages compared to conventional diagnostic techniques.

This early detection is crucial, as it increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery for patients.

The technology’s accuracy has been rigorously validated by numerous application specialists, who have noted a 70% reduction in workload for healthcare professionals when a cancer diagnosis is confirmed.

Expert insights

An application specialist at Vertec, Michelle Botha, explained how Lunit AI operates, highlighting its potential to revolutionise breast cancer detection.

She said this technology allows them to detect breast cancer in the early stages.
“The system’s advanced algorithms and machine learning capabilities are super impressive. Our confidence in Lunit AI reflects a growing optimism in the medical community about its ability to combat this prevalent disease,” Botha said.

Commitment to women’s health

The COO of Diagnostic Radiological Services, Robert Souter, articulated the urgent need for such innovation, citing breast cancer as one of the top five invasive cancers in South Africa.

“Our determination to fight against this illness drives our commitment to bringing the latest technology to our patients,” he stated.

The introduction of Lunit AI represents a proactive step towards improving outcomes for those at risk of breast cancer.

As the local hospital integrates Lunit AI into its diagnostic processes, the potential for improved early detection and patient care is promising.

With the backing of healthcare professionals and a commitment to combating breast cancer, this advancement could mark a pivotal moment in the fight against one of the most common cancers affecting women today.
