Different Johannesburg entities gather to celebrate Arbor Day
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve celebrated Arbor Day and encouraged everyone to plant more trees to keep our environment in a good condition.
Arbor Day was marked by a spirited and impactful event at Klipriversberg Nature Reserve, underscoring the importance of tree planting and environmental conservation on September 7.
Arbor Day, derived from the Latin word for tree, aims to foster a global commitment to tree planting and environmental awareness.
The manager of Klipriversberg Nature Reserve, Tumi Shoba, emphasised the urgency of individual action in addressing climate change.
She said prompt action was needed to make a difference.
“We all need to take ownership and start caring. Arbor Day celebrated globally, is not confined to South Africa but extends to numerous countries, promoting tree care and environmental stewardship,” Shoba said.
Bishop Ngobeli, manager of Protected Areas at Johannesburg City Parks and Zoos (JCPZ), highlighted the critical need for green urban environments.
He noted Arbor Day represented more than just planting trees; it is about raising awareness on tree conservation, educating the public on the myriad benefits trees provide, and promoting environmental education across all age groups.
SANParks honorary rangers and their junior counterparts made a significant impact with their educational exhibits, demonstrating the importance of involving youth in environmental education. Their engaging presentations were a highlight of the day, showcasing how effective peer-to-peer learning can be.
Cheryl Ogilvie from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and notable figures, including Sinah Magolo and Mosa Rametse from JCPZ, stressed the significance of trees in maintaining ecological balance.
They pointed out that trees absorb carbon dioxide, combat air pollution, prevent soil erosion, and conserve water.
Rand Water’s Water Wise team, led by Faith Mabunda and Mascot Manzi, enhanced the celebration by engaging children in learning about water conservation and its link to tree health.
Travis Askham, environmental manager at Thaba Eco Hotel and Park, added excitement to the day with a competition involving a green game drive vehicle and a catchy slogan challenge.
Additionally, JCPZ’s science lab provided interactive, curriculum-linked experiments that captivated participants and demonstrated the practical aspects of natural science.
The event also featured career advice from Cheryl and Naquita Faria on careers in nature conservation and educational activities by Nomusa Masubelele from the Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science, who used a fun puzzle to teach about human anatomy.
Louise Rowbotham’s exhibit on the 5 Rs and Teresa Faria’s artistic upcycling projects from Mastermind Academy further illustrated practical ways to support environmental sustainability.
The day was not only a celebration of trees but a comprehensive demonstration of collective efforts to protect and enhance our environment.
From hands-on activities to educational displays, the event highlighted the importance of every individual’s role in making a positive environmental impact.
As the day concluded, it was clear that Arbor Day at Klipriversberg Nature Reserve was more than a commemorative occasion – it was a call to action for all to contribute to a greener, healthier planet.
