WATCH: Councillor urges visitors to keep Wemmerpan Dam clean

Always clear your mess, and do not litter in the dam.

Although Wemmerpan Dam is one of the major attractions in the old south of Johannesburg, some visitors to the dam do not keep it clean.

Ward 57 Councilor Faeeza Chame sadly noted that littering in the dam remains a serious concern.

“The people who frequent the dam to have family time or just sit and admire the beautiful view must be mindful of the litter and filth they leave on the edges of the dam. It is mostly caused by people having picnics, who throw their dirt and braai ashes into the dam.

“The polluted water can have many negative effects on the economy. It directly impacts sectors like recreational businesses, tourism and even property values, all of which rely on clean water,” explained Chame.

She said that currently, human activity and inadequate management of dumping and littering caused the dam’s poor water quality and problems, thus reducing the value for recreational purposes.

“Littering is a huge concern in Johannesburg and is more visible after the onset of seasonal rain. Littering is illegal. Let us maintain a clean environment to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” she said.
