Johannesburg’s Golden City Rollers gears up for third annual home season showdown

Get ready for a rollercoaster of thrills as Johannesburg's Golden City Rollers gear up for their third annual home season, featuring intense matchups between the powerhouse teams, Chrome Chaos and Mercury Mayhem.

Johannesburg’s Golden City Rollers (GCR) are set to ignite the city with their third annual home season showdown.

This thrilling series of events promises to deliver non-stop excitement as the league’s two formidable teams, Chrome Chaos and Mercury Mayhem, battle it out beginning on March 9.

Roller derby, renowned for its intense physicality and electrifying performances, has experienced a surge in popularity because of its blend of athletic prowess and theatrical flair.

Originally gaining notoriety during the 1970s, the sport underwent a revival in the early 2000s, transforming into a testament to human endurance and skill.

Focusing strongly on gender equality, the roller derby welcomes participants of all backgrounds and identities. Although predominantly led by women globally, the sport offers opportunities for individuals of any gender to participate and excel.

Currently, the roller derby is one of the United Kingdom’s fastest-growing sports among females.

GCR, founded in 2010, has been instrumental in promoting the sport within South Africa. As the country’s undisputed national champions, they have claimed victory at each National Derby Festival held since 2016.

Moreover, GCR made history in March 2020 by winning ‘A Frican Good Time’, the inaugural pan-African roller derby tournament, defeating teams from Cairo, Dubai, Cape Town, and Durban with a commanding score of 285-37.

In June 2024, GCR aims to further cement their status as a pioneer by becoming the first African roller derby league to achieve a Worldwide Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) ranking after participating in multiple European tournaments.

This year’s Home Season kicks off on March 9, followed by additional matches scheduled for April 13 and May 11. All games will be at União Portuguesa, located at 64 Eastwood Street, Turffontein. Tickets for these highly anticipated bouts are available through Quicket.
