Men’s health awareness month campaign

A success campaign to promote men's health in commemoration of Movember

The City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) in partnership with Sports and Recreation and the Department of Health and Social Development hosted a Men’s Health Awareness Month Campaign targeting men of all ages.

The campaign was held on November 29 at Pick n Pay, Mulbarton, with the intent to raise awareness about men’s health issues and promote preventive healthcare and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.

The following services were offered: screening for glucose, blood pressure, HIV, prostate cancer, referrals for therapy and aerobics.

Ward 23 and 67 community engagement officer, Pieter van Vuuren, said: “There are many health issues we face daily and men never get the attention as emphasis is usually placed more on women’s health awareness.”

Van Vuuren added that men are often scared to raise their concerns because of the stigmas but this campaign aims to bring awareness to men and encourage them to go for health screenings.

“Campaigns like this need to happen because many people are struggling financially and healthcare is expensive. These free services make it convenient for men to get checked.”

Nurses from Bellavista and Glenanda Clinic came out to assist.

Dr Mlungisi Ngomane attended to questions asked by men, debunking some myths and educating the public on basic health. The nurses conducted the screenings while Old Mutual offered financial advice and IEC assisted the public with voting registration.

Olivier Ntotshi, a member of the public, completed a screening and said: “The experience was good. I am pleased with the services offered and I am happy I did this check-up. I think it’s important for us, as men, to be aware of our health status to ensure we function well within society.”
