Community comes together for cancer awareness walk

The walkathon was a success as it reached many people to bring awareness about cancer

South Africa United Against Cancer (SAUAC) hosted a wellness walk against cancer.

Young and old came out to the walk to support the organisation and those fighting and living with cancer. It was a successful day as everyone joined in unity and brought great energy for a good cause.

The walkathon is an annual event hosted to support cancer patients. It took place at Rietvlei Zoo Farm, Alberton.

The community had fun supporting the event.

The walk is a symbol of hope and light for those surviving and living with cancer. Participants enjoyed either the 5km or 10km trail walk.

Founder of SAUAC, Tshepang Lutshaba said: “I would like to express my gratitude to all the cancer survivors who came out to support the event. I do not have any sponsors and it may not look like much but with the little that I have and the help of the people who pitched in, I am thankful.

“We set a target for 5 000 people. However, we reached 1 200 people and it was well supported,” expressed Lutshaba.

Thabisile Ntuli attended the walk.

She hopes that she can continue hosting the wellness walk annually, to bring awareness and change to the lives of people fighting cancer.

“This event provides a safe space for cancer patients and survivors. I have hopes that it will grow each year, providing cancer patients and survivors with the necessities needed to overcome the disease,” said Lutshaba.
