How to stay safe during CIT heist

Being aware of these safety tips provided by Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group, can make a crucial difference in navigating a cash-in-transit incident safely.

With an increasing number of heists occurring in Johannesburg South and its surrounding areas, residents must be aware of safety measures in such situations.

Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group, shares vital tips to help individuals navigate these dangerous scenarios and prioritise their safety.

• Maintain distance

In the unfortunate event of a cash-in-transit (CIT) incident, prioritise putting distance between yourself and the crime scene. Avoid exiting your vehicle, as this could put you at risk of being caught in the crossfire. Instead, seek to vacate the area if it’s safe to do so.

• Prioritise personal safety

Never attempt to approach the perpetrators of a CIT incident. These individuals are armed and pose a significant threat. Always remember that your safety should be the top priority.

• Avoid eye contact

It’s crucial to refrain from making any form of eye or physical contact with the criminals. Doing so could agitate them, potentially leading to irrational behaviour.

• Keep your engine running

If you find yourself near a CIT robbery, ensure you do not switch off your vehicle. This precaution is essential in case you need to make a quick escape. Keep the engine running at all times.

• Share videos with authorities

If you capture a video of the incident, share it directly with the authorities rather than posting it on social media. While sharing on social platforms may seem like a way to help, it can jeopardise the investigation by spreading sensitive information.

• Exercise caution when filming

While videos and photographs from your phone can be valuable, it’s important to be cautious. Filming during a CIT incident may inadvertently draw attention to you, potentially making you a target. Use discretion and prioritise your safety.

• Notify the authorities

In any emergency, it’s vital to immediately notify the police. Contact SAPS at 10111 and provide them with all relevant information. However, always remember that your safety comes first.

• Shopping centre safety

If you witness a cross-pavement heist near an ATM while at a shopping centre, the same principles apply. If you’re not in your car, create as much distance as possible between yourself and the perpetrators. Lie flat on the floor to minimise the risk of being caught in the crossfire. Promptly notify the authorities or centre management.
