Crime on the rise in the South of Johannesburg

With crime on the rise it helps to be vigilant and always be aware of your surroundings.

With the festive season around the corner, we have seen an increase in trio crimes, which are residential robberies, business robberies and hijackings.

The CHRONICLE asked Fox Security and CPS Security for more details around the increase of trio crimes.

Francois Jansen, operation director for Fox security, said: “With load-shedding happening more and more, criminals know your alarm battery only lasts a certain amount of hours.

“They then take that opportunity to gain access into your premises as no alarm will trigger.

“Criminals switch off your electricity box at night while you are asleep or during the day when you are at work and then gain access to your premises.

“When testing your security system, ensure that your security company receives every signal and test signals at least five minutes apart.

“Purchase a bigger battery or a UPS to ensure your alarm will have power when there is load-shedding. Make sure you are not being followed when arriving home after work.

“Over this windy period make sure all your windows are closed before you arm the alarm. Cut back foliage in and around your garden to prevent plants from triggering your security beams. Make sure that there are no branches or bushes over/against your electric fence.”

Prevent petty theft

Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle overnight. Please ensure your vehicle is locked at night.

Burglars break open the water meter outside your property. They then ring the intercom or call out to tell you there is a burst pipe in front of your property.

Do not go outside to check. As soon as you step outside to check, they will rob you.

Tyronne van der Merwe, sales director for CPS Security, said “We have information about a group operating on the N12 highway with between two and three vehicles. They try to convince you that there is something wrong with your vehicle.

“Once you stop to inspect your vehicle they rob you. A lot of cellphone snatching is also happening at shopping centres. House breakings are also on the rise due to negligence like leaving the doors open.

“If you get expensive gifts for Christmas, like TV sets and gaming stations, it’s better to break the boxes up, as it might lead to people knowing what you have in your house. Leave a radio on when you go away on holiday.

“Bank followings are also on the increase. It’s better to be vigilant or avoid working with cash.”
