Visually impaired triathlete guns for Commonwealth Games

Accomplished sportsman Gavin Kilpatrick is among a group that worked hard on the sporting front towards qualifying for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in July.

This is after the Mayberry Park visually impaired triathlete and his guide, Casper Moodie, competed in Egypt.

“We raced in Egypt in search of world ranking points at the 2021 African Continental Championships for Paratriathlon. We then competed in Portugal for ranking points. They will hopefully announce the team by the end of December to confirm if we have made it to the Commonwealth Games,” said Kilpatrick.

The inspirational pair finished in second place in Egypt and secured much-needed points towards their overall world ranking.

Kilpatrick said he puts his complete trust in his eyes and guide Moodie to navigate him safely through the demanding race routes.

He told the RECORD it was the first time a large team represented team South Africa at a paratriathlon.

“Casper’s ability to calm me down during the remainder of an 890m swim was a lifesaving act of heroism. It was a true testament to the level of trust a person with a sight impairment places in his or her guide during such circumstances. Casper saved my life,” said Gavin.

He reiterated that their determination in these competitions reflects the character of uniquely abled athletes and highlights the depth in their mental ability as athletes.

“We would like to wish team South Africa paratriathlon well in their preparations over the next eight months. We also invite any potential sponsors who wish to contribute to the team to come forward and offer assistance and support towards making the dreams of these athletes come true,” said Kilpatrick.
