JSPCA winter wish list

Johannesburg SPCA urges people to spare a thought for all the homeless dogs and cats that end up at shelters.

Winter is here and we are all taking out our heaters and blankets and making hot soup.

Johannesburg SPCA urges people to spare a thought for all the homeless dogs and cats that end up at shelters.

“Stray and donated animals are not seasonal, and they end up at shelters right through the year. Unwanted litters of kittens and puppies are being born and discarded daily.

“The JSPCA works around the clock to try and provide the best we can for the animals that end up on our doorstep. We never know what tomorrow brings, that is why we need your help this winter,” JSPCA’s Liana Marx said.

They need donations of dog and cat food, dry or wet, any brand or flavour. A hungry pet is not going to be fussy but is going to be most grateful for receiving a bowl of food.

Some animals that enter their gates have not had a meal in days.

“The number of unwanted animals we receive makes the need for donated food much greater. Spare a thought when doing shopping or feeding your beloved pet.”

If anyone can donate any food towards the JSPCA, contact them on 011 681 3600 or send an email to pr@jhbspca.co.za to arrange collection.

“Blankets are always needed, especially now. We ensure every pet in our care has a clean, dry blanket daily.

“These blankets get changed twice a day to ensure they are clean. Please donate any unwanted or new blankets to a shelter pet who does not have the comfort of an owned animal.

“We have heaters installed in some of our kennels, especially our puppy block where we do our best to ensure they are warm during the night.

“However, our need for blankets is quite high as we ensure each animal has blankets to protect them from the elements.

“Some of our wall heaters have started to crack or the dogs have chewed the wires. If anyone can help us with heaters that we can attach to the walls please pop an email to pr@jhbspca.co.za

“We receive so many puppies and kittens, the kidney-shaped beds are ideal to use for them as it helps to keep them warm. Blankets are placed in them and help to form a warm pocket under the blankets for them to climb into. We need small, medium and large as sometimes we have a mom and pups and we have to ensure all of them are comfortable,” said Marx.

They need your help to ensure that this winter we can help as many animals as possible.
