Gauteng Traffic Police cautions against excessive speeding

The Gauteng Traffic Police urges motorists to drive responsibly and to adhere to speed limits.

After making numerous arrests on major routes over the weekend, the Gauteng Traffic Police urges motorists to drive responsibly and to adhere to speed limits.

The highest speed recorded was reportedly that of a 52-year-old male motorbiker who was caught excessively speeding at 209km per hour. He had been speeding on a 120km per hour zone along the R21 freeway.

According to Sello Maremane of Gauteng Traffic Police, the biker was formally charged with reckless and negligent driving and exceeding the prescribed speed limit of 120km/h on a freeway.

He said the successful arrests were made possible by the use of the latest technological devices such as the Moving Violation Recorders (MVR).

“The MVR records the average speed measured over a minimum of 500 metres. The event is recorded and downloaded for investigation and prosecution purposes. Excessive speeding significantly contributes to the high number of road fatalities in the province,” said Maremane.

He said it is important for drivers to continue to adhere to the general speed limit on Gauteng’s major routes to save lives.

“We will ensure that high-speed operations are intensified in all corridors to enhance road safety. We call upon drivers to exercise caution by adhering to the rules of the road and drive at a prescribed speed limit to save the lives of passengers and other road users,” he said.
