Two Turffontein robbery suspects sentenced

The suspects were brought to the station and charged with robbery using weapons other than firearms.

Two Turffontein suspects were recently found guilty of robbery with weapons other than firearms and sentenced to 18 years’ and 15 years’ direct imprisonment and unfit to possess a firearm respectively.

On September 20, 2019, at 11.50pm the complainant was walking along Hay Street in Turffontein when he was approached by three black men playing music with a speaker box.

They asked him to give them R5 and he gave it to them. Then there were suddenly eight men around him and they told him that R5 was too little for all of them and they wanted more. They demanded he gives them R50.

They then took out knives and started searching him, robbed him and threatened to kill him. The suspects also took the bag that contained a Huawei P8 Lite cellphone, house keys, wallet and cash. They then ran away.

The complainant continued to walk and he noticed a police van which he stopped and told them what had happened. The police looked for the suspects and caught two of them.

The suspects were brought to the station and charged with robbery using weapons other than firearms.
The docket was handed to Sgt Ntsako Mabunda to investigate.

The docket was placed in court and on February 5, both suspects were found guilty and charged as follows:

suspect one was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment and unfit to possess a firearm and suspect two got 15 years’ direct imprisonment and unfit to possess a firearm.

Booysens SAPS communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said the management thanked the members who made the arrests and Mabunda in obtaining the conviction.
