Dagga plantation thrives in Glen Eagles

"This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible," says a concerned resident.

GLEN EAGLES – Dagga bushes are growing at a fast and furious pace along the banks of the spruit running through Glen Eagles, at the back of Builders Warehouse, close by to Glenanda.

Last year the CHRONICLE reported on the same issue as well as vagrants who were living by the spruit.

A concerned resident said, “The dagga that is growing here will be ready for harvesting soon and the vagrants will then dry and sell it. Many school children walk close to here after school and I’d hate to think they could be the recipients of dagga.

Vagrants are living by the spruit.

“Apart from this, vagrants are building shacks and making fires to cook. Quite often they can be seen washing themselves in the spruit and the pollution is terrible.

“I don’t know who this piece of land belongs to which runs by the spruit but action needs to be taken as soon as possible!”
The resident said he has contacted the police about this matter as well as Ward 23 councillor, Paul Smit.

The CHRONICLE contacted Clr Smit for comment. “Last year I reported the matter to the Environmental Health Department. I’ve been informed that the contract with City Parks has been cancelled and no replacement has been put in place for the cleaning of stands.

“This will have a negative impact on the cleaning of overgrown stands and land. I agree with the resident that the dagga should be removed as quickly as possible before the vagrants harvest and sell it. Drugs are a huge problem in schools today. Selling the dagga to school children will be an easy money maker for the vagrants,” he said.
