UPDATE: Learners to be placed in school halls in the South

If we had space, we wouldn't even have this meeting.

ON Monday and Tuesday, scores of parents vented their frustrations over the school placement issues at President High School.

At President High School

The Gauteng Education Chief Director, Dennis Makwakwa went to consult with the department to come up with a solution to resolve the matter.

Makwakwa said they have looked at options of utilising school halls in the area, where they going to accommodate learners whilst waiting for the outcomes in terms of, either getting a mobile school or getting the Telkom building in the South.

According to Gauteng Education Chief Director, Dennis Makwakwa: “What parents need to understand is that, when learners are placed in school halls, we going to use the ‘Group Teaching’ method. Group Teaching means we going to divide the learners accordingly but there will be three or four teachers in the same hall, teaching at the same time.”

Makwakwa stated that only learners with full school uniforms are going to be permitted at the school’s premises and they are going to put their officials at the gate on Wednesday, January 29.

The Gauteng Department of Education, spokesperson, Steve Mabona provided his comment on the situation at President High School:

MEC Lesufi condemns in the strongest terms the recent disruption of Hoёrskool President by parents. We implore parents to understand that the school (Hoёrskool President) is only used as one of the admission centers in the Johannesburg Central District and not a school where learners will be placed.

The department has since resolved to offer parents who appealed temporary placement at a school in Diepkloof, transport, and teachers will be provided. However, Parents refused the offer. The department is currently negotiating with Telkom to use its building in Booysen’s. Parents are warming up to the idea, the department is finalizing negotiations.

The department is currently negotiating with schools in the area to open their halls to temporarily accommodate learners while negotiations are underway.

The department respect and uphold everyone’s right to protest as enshrined in our constitution. However, we request parents not to disrupt learning and teaching in our schools.
