WATCH: Wemmer Pan Dam contaminated by raw sewage

According to Liz Venter, who works near the dam, this has been happening for weeks and the fish are in danger of dying.

“SOMETHING needs to be done, and urgently.”

These are the words of Springfield resident Fabian Boshoff when he alerted the COURIER about the sewage spillage into Wemmerpan Dam on July 31.

He said this is a health hazard of note.

“The immediate suburb’s sewage is spilling into the dam and is unlivable, you cannot breathe. This has been reported a month ago and nothing has been done,” noted Boshoff.

According to Liz Venter, who works near the dam, this has been happening for weeks and the fish are in danger of dying.

Wemmerpan Dam is now contaminated with sewage.

In the absence of Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame, her colleague, Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton, attended to the matter.

“I went there to see the situation with Tyrell Meyers. We contacted Joburg Water and they said they will send a team to do tests and come up with a solution. I think the sewage leaked into the stormwater drains, ending up in the dam,” he said.

However, manager of communications and marketing at Joburg Water Isaac Dhludhlu said the sewage spillage was news to him.

“I wasn’t aware until now. The matter is escalated to the operations department for immediate attention and resolution.”
