WATCH: R20-million damage as five buses catch fire in Pomona
The company CEO is grateful that no-one was injured
Five buses at Cullinan Transport in Pomona were destroyed by fire during the early hours of Friday morning, causing damage in excess of R20-million.
Although investigations into the fire are still underway, Geert van Doorn, CEO of Cullinan Transport, said it appeared there was an electrical issue with one of the buses.
“The fire started in one of the coaches and because there were other coaches next to it, the fire spread to the others,” said van Doorn.
“At this point we don’t suspect foul play, but we don’t have conclusive information as to exactly how the fire started. Investigations will reveal what caused the fire. We are truly grateful that no one was injured as a result of the fire.”
According to Sec Pros’ Gerald Groenewald, they received an urgent call for backup from various WhatsApp groups in the Pomona area around 2am.
“We dispatched vehicles as we have clients in close proximity to the fire and upon arrival, five buses were alight,” said Groenewald.
“SSS Smart Security and Sec Pros helped contain the fire until the fire department took over the scene which was cleared at about 3.45am. The fire department continued to douse foam and water to completely extinguish flames.”
Van Doorn also told Express that although three other buses were badly damaged, other buses, also at the depot, survived the blaze as they were removed.
“Five buses have been completely destroyed. Three were badly damaged as they were close to those on fire but were moved,” said van Doorn.
“There was night security and cleaning personnel and they managed to help move the other coaches. The staff on scene helped detect the fire and we are grateful that they were not injured.”
ER24 was on the scene to assist in the event of any possible injuries.
“The cost of the damage is big but again we are glad that no lives were lost and even more grateful at how everyone, including our staff, security companies, mechanics, fire department and everyone else, worked together to contain the fire,” concluded van Doorn.
