Ten-year-old from Kenilworth loves mowing lawns

Siyabonga told COURIER he adores mowing lawns and that helps him to stay away from the busy streets of Kenilworth and neighbouring areas in Rosettenville.

SIYABONGA Mazolo loves mowing lawns, be it for his family or neighbours.

The 10-year-old from Kenilworth started mowing their lawn from the early age of four years, inheriting the skills from his father. Siyabonga’s cutting is praised by his mother and neighbours and he loves seeing his home clean and the garden tidy.

His mother, Thakane, said they used to ask people to mow their lawn for them, but that became too expensive. Since young Siyabonga started to help, they have saved a lot of money. However, he does charge neighbours for his services.

Siyabonga told COURIER he adores mowing lawns and that helps him to stay away from the busy streets of Kenilworth and neighbouring areas in Rosettenville.

“Mowing lawns is all about the love of it. I have saved my family a lot of money over the years because they now rely on me to cut the grass. I wish my peers can follow my example because what I’m doing isn’t only for me, but it is also helping my parents,” said Siyabonga.

He attends school at Voorband Primary School in Forest Hill and is in Grade Six.

“Cutting grass doesn’t affect his academics,” his mother said. “He does the cutting mostly on school holidays or weekends and not during the week because his academics must not be disturbed. He desires to own a company one day which will focus on mowing lawns.”

Siyabonga said no one his age can do what he does with love.

“One has to love mowing lawns in order to continue doing it. This is what I love and enjoy doing at all times and no one can take it away from me,” added Siyabonga.

When Siyabonga isn’t mowing lawns, he helps his mother with house chores and other things.

He believes staying indoors will keep him safe.

“He doesn’t only cut for us, but for other people as well. He’s young, but the way he holds the machines is unbelievable. I hope my boy continues to impress me,” said Thakane.
