WATCH: Kulani remembered by Reuven Old Age Home residents

NEWS of the murder of Mondeor High School learner Kulani Mathebula came as a shock to many of the residents of Reuven Old Age Home.

The learners and staff of Mondeor High are well known for their occasional social visits to the home when they entertain the residents with song and dance, recitals and choral singing of oldies songs the elderly are fond of. They also personally visit the sick, the frail and the elderly and give them presents, such as gift packs and fruit.

Kulani was part of that group.

Nineteen-year-old Kulani, a Grade 11 learner, was on his way to school last Wednesday when he was attacked by three teenagers who stabbed him to death and stole his cellphone. All three were later arrested and released into their parents’ custody. They were charged with murder and robbery.

Caroline Ngoasheng, the leader of the social group at Reuven Old Age Home, said she remembered Kulani very well.

“The school always invites the residents of Reuven to their concerts. They even arrange transport, and the learners entertain us. This makes the evening most enjoyable. The learners are very proficient and well trained. We can still remember Kulani as the smart and talented model,” said Ngoasheng.

“We at Reuven Old Age Home wish to convey our deep felt condolences to the family of the deceased and to the learners and staff of Mondeor High School. We admire the high morals and integrity the school stands for. We salute the principal and staff for encouraging the learners to show empathy and respect to the elderly and to become actively involved in the lives of the elderly,” said Ngoasheng.
