Naturena business robbery turns into death scene

An off-duty JMPD officer was also involved in this hostile situation as he was at the tavern for leisure. The officer's life was claimed by shots the suspects fired.

MONDOER SAPS has opened a case of murder, attempted murder, and business robbery after a dramatic shoot-out in the afternoon of February 24 at Lind’s Tavern in Naturena.

According to the SAPS, six unknown males entered the premises as potential customers. One of the suspects is said to have gone to the counter and demanded money while another suspect went to the main house and also demanded money.

The other four monitored the situation, holding customers hostage. Mpndeor SAPS communications officer Lorraine van Emmerik said suspects threatened customers at gunpoint and forced them to lay on the floor.

An off-duty JMPD officer was also involved in this hostile situation as he was at the tavern for leisure. The officer’s life was claimed by shots the suspects fired.

“The suspects started shooting for unknown reasons and forms part of the investigation. All injured victims on the scene were rushed to the hospital, two died,” said van Emmerik.

The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of money. Owners of a shop adjacent to the tavern claim R7 000 was taken from them by the suspects.

MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun is appealing to members of the public who might have information regarding the suspects to come forward so justice can be served.

“We are aggrieved by the death of the officer, as a department we are committed to assisting the investigating officers to ensure the culprits are arrested and face the full might of the law,” said Sun.
