Empty stands in Ward 124 causing problems

Mnyameni Mongameli, Ward 124 Councillor, visited all vacant stands in an attempt to defuse residents’ concerns.

RESIDENTS of Ward 124 are fed up with robberies, assaults and theft and they feel that thugs hiding out on vacant stands are the cause of criminal activities.

Mnyameni Mongameli, Ward 124 councillor visited all vacant stands in an attempt to defuse residents’ concerns and the COURIER accompanied the councillor to four of these stands.

This visit comes after residents logged multiple complaints to Mongameli about the high rate of crime. Thugs have used the stands as their hideout spot to prey on residents.

On each and every stand visited there are overgrown grass, waste, recyclable materials and old clothes. The smell on these stands is unbearable and residents living in neighbouring houses can’t take it anymore. Mongameli believes that the solution to the problem is to find rightful owners of each stand.

“Our people can’t continue living in fear. Seeing people too scared to express themselves in their neighbourhood because of thugs. It is just frustrating. But all of this will come to an end. I will contact relevant people to assist in resolving the matter,” said Mongameli.

Some people have occupied some stands illegally and Mongameli told the COURIER he will try and find a shelter for those people.

One resident from Booysens said, “We really need these stands to be monitored now and again. We are being terrorised by thugs because they use these stands as a spot to harm us.”

Mongameli promised residents of Ward 124 he will come up with a concrete plan.
