Solar power helps Jackson Drift resident generate electricity

JACKSON Drift informal settlement is like any other informal settlement that has been demanding electricity installation for years.

But that hasn’t prevented Carlos Tvina (33) from using electrical appliances courtesy of solar power. He said to COURIER having no electricity almost derailed his life because he was always behind with the latest news and trends. There came a time in his life where he couldn’t buy meat because his fridge needed electricity to function. For light, he used candles which almost set his shack alight in 2015, so that forced him to buy a solar panel.

“When it was soccer derby time I struggled. I had to go to neighbouring communities to watch football, therefore I needed to make an instant change. Buying a solar panel hasn’t helped me only, but my next door neighbour as well, but they only use it to listen to radio and charge their phones,” said Carlos.

Carlos wants the settlement demands of electricity to be met because when it’s winter he struggles to get electrical power from the sun.
